Why other methods don’t work:


Running disk wipe software – Programs that claim to wipe your data
from your disk depend on a fully functioning hard disk. If your disk has some
mechanical issue, that could prevent data from being erased from your disk.
Besides, how often have you ever seen a bug-free computer program? How many
bugs would it take for that program to say it wiped your disk but for it to
leave some recoverable data on it?

Dropping the disk onto a hard surface – This method might damage
the disk enough to prevent it from being used as your daily hard disk again.
But, this technique will not erase the data from the disk platters. In all
likelihood, the platters inside will only be minimally
damaged if at all. There are data recovery specialists who can remove the
platters from the disk body, mount them in their special rigs and recover your
data.

Run over the disk with your car – Running over the disk with a car
will not smash it like many people believe it would. I had our local garbage
truck run over a hard disk and the extent of the damage was the lid was dented
and the top platter was bent a little. Data recovery specialists would probably
have some trouble recovering data from that top bent platter but would easily
recover data from the remaining platters.

Hitting the hard disk with a hammer – The hammers that most people
own would do very little damage to your typical computer hard disk. Like
running it over with a car, hitting it with a hammer would maybe do some damage
to the very top most platter and leave the rest of the data platters untouched.
To do any real damage you would need to have a very large sledge hammer and
have a place where you could really smack. This would also damage the surface
the disk was sitting on (your garage, patio or driveway) and you could also
easily have some pieces fly out from the drive. Who knows what or who they
could hit? You would need to clear away anything that could be damaged by
flying metal parts from the immediate area.

Drilling holes through the disk – I have heard a lot of people say
that they can destroy their hard disk and the data on it by drilling a few
holes through the disk drive. Of course
no data could be recovered where you drilled a hole. But, that’s a very small percentage
of the data on your disk drive. You would have to drill enough holes through
the disk drive to destroy all of the tracks on the disk drive. And, this
assumes that you own an electric drill and have a place where you could do
this. Taking in account the cost to buy a drill and your time, this method is
very impractical, not cost effective and likely to still leave data on your
disk drive.
